Discussion on ‘Fascism in Cinema’

Even in cinema, nature of violence is changing and more and more protagonists are taking
law into their hands. The defence of violence in the name of ideology on the screen is a
matter of much concern, said senior playwright and director Raghunandana here on Monday.
Speaking on ‘Fascism in Cinema’ at Gandhian Centre for Philosophical Arts and Sciences,
MAHE, Mr. Raghunandana said popular cinema also reflects certain trends in our society.
‘From respect for the law, we moved to taking law into one’s own hands. Now it is
ideological violence on the screen too’, he elaborated.
Illustrating his view with scenes from films such as Zanjeer (1973), Sholey(1975),
Gangaajal(2003), Monsoon shootout(2013), Vikram Vedha(2017), Mulk(2018), etc., he
argued that these films chronologically set, also reflect the changing nature of violence in
society. He also expressed concern over many mega-budget films taking people far away
from reality, almost endorsing fascist tendencies.
GCPAS Head Prof. Varadesh Hiregange and Prof. Phaniraj moderated the discussion.
GCPAS students and others participated in the discussion.
