International Nurses’ Day celebration 2022

Manipal, 13 th May 2022: Manipal College of Nursing & Manipal School of Nursing
Manipal has observed International Nurses’ Week- 2022 from 7 th May to 12 th May 2022 on the
occasion of the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The
theme chosen by the International Council of Nurses for the year 2022 is “Nurses: A Voice to
Lead – Invest in nursing and respect rights to secure global health”.
The formal program was organized on 12 th May 2022 at the Dr. TMA Pai Hall, 2 nd Floor,
KMC, Manipal. Dr. Judith A Noronha, Dean, Manipal College of Nursing welcomed the
gathering. Dr. Soumya Christabel, Convenor, International Nurses’ Day shared a brief report of
the week-long activities conducted. Chief Guest, Mr. C G Muthana, Chief Operating Officer,
Kasturba Hospital Manipal during the inaugural address said the nurses require competencies
to handle various situations like finance, effective communication, and material management
including the patient care. He also reiterated the dynamic acquirement of competencies at all
levels which starts from unconscious incompetency to the unconscious competency and it has
to be acquired through continuous practice and experience. Hence, he opined that it is
important to gain the highest level of competencies to handle the patient care situation. He
also appreciated the work of nurses and their dedication to patient care across the world.
On this occasion, eminent nurses Mrs. BV Sumangala, Primary Health Nursing Officer,
Primary Health Centre, Hirebettu, Mrs. Precilla Noronha, Infection Control Nurse, Kasturba
Hospital Manipal, were felicitated for their contribution towards welfare for patient and Dr.
Elsa Sanatombi Devi, Professor, Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, Manipal College of
Nursing was felicitated for being the recipient of National Florence Nightingale award for her
contribution to the nursing profession. Dr. Tessy Treesa Jose, Associate Dean, highlighted the
achievements of these three nurses who were felicitated during the occasion.

Various activities like Quiz & Poem Competition, a Radio Talk on weaning diet, an online
awareness program on ‘Nursing as a profession and its scope’, a workshop on “Medical
technology innovation and Paradigm shift in healthcare" and a Seminar on the Nurses’ Day
theme given by International Council of Nurses were organized by the different departments of
MCON, MAHE, Manipal.
Mrs. Jeyalakshmi, Co-Convener, proposed the vote of thanks. The inaugural function
was followed by a seminar on the theme. Dr. Jyothi Chakrabarty, Professor & Head,
Department of HoD Medical-Surgical Nursing deliberated a session on "Nurses' rights to a safe
working environment” and Dr. Sushmitha Karkada, Asst. Professor (Sr. Scale), Department of
OBG Nursing deliberated a session on "Strategic leadership to advance the working
