World Blood Donor Day is observed at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal

 

Manipal, 14th June 2023: World Blood Donor Day is observed on June 14 to spread awareness regarding the need for “safe blood and blood products for transfusion”. According to the World Health Organization, blood-related products are crucial for public health across the globe. This day also marks an opportunity to thank volunteers and blood donors for their contributions.

For 2023, the theme is “Give Blood, Give Plasma, Share Life, Share Often”. According to the WHO, the theme will put light on the roles that voluntary blood donation plays in saving lives every year across the globe.

On this occasion Blood Centre of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal organized Training for Blood Donors Motivators. Mr Shankar Naik, Assistant Drug Control officer, Udupi was the chief guest of the program. Inaugurating the program, he emphasized on the importance of blood donation and the need to create awareness among the public.

He said that, ‘with a lot of advancements in science also, still there is no alternative to blood except blood. Hence, the public should participate in the process of saving lives by donating blood periodically’.

Dr. Avinash Shetty speaking in the program said that, there is a huge difference in blood demand and supply in India. Due to this patients are not able to get enough blood. He said that the solution to this is to donate more and more blood.

A poster design competition was organized on blood donation. KMC Dean Dr Padmaraj Hegde distributed prizes to the winners. Dr Shamee Shastri, Director-Blood centre, Kasturba Hospital Manipal gave an overview of the program.
