WORLD NATURE CONSERVATION DAY-28th July

“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

World Nature Conservation Day is celebrated annually on 28th July worldwide. The significance of this day is to educate everyone the importance of conserving the natural resources which Mother Earth has provided to mankind.

It is necessary to create a healthy environment to safeguard the present and future generation. There are several threats to nature like deforestation, illegal wildlife trade, pollution, using plastics, chemicals etc. Earth has provided basic necessity to live like water, air, soil, minerals, trees, animals, food etc. So, we should keep nature clean and healthy. Industrial development and several other factors are also responsible for the depletion of nature.

Some of the best methods which help in conservation of Nature are listed below:
1. Recycling- We should endeavor to recycle waste, especially paper as much as possible. This helps to conserve nature and the natural resources.
2. Avoid usage of Plastic- Most of the corporate offices these days have urged their employees to get their own ceramic mugs, and water bottles to avoid usage of paper/plastic cups to consume water or other beverages. This is a great initiative to avoid usage of plastic which takes forever to decompose in the soil.
3.Reduce Electricity consumption- Switch off lights during day time within your house/offices, avoid switching on passage lights in a building during day time, switching off street lights on time are some of the ways to save electricity.
4. Plant Trees- Most common advice given across the world by environmentalists is to grow trees and avoid cutting them as much as possible.

Relevance of World Nature Conservation to Udupi District:
I am from Udupi and have seen the massive growth of Udupi over the years now. Traffic on the streets has increased multifold. Due to this, the pollution is also increasing day by day. It’s time people understand that vehicles have to be used only when there is an actual need for it. In the pursuit of social status display, many have been buying vehicles and going around without realising the impact of it on nature. Udupi city has several means of public transport* like bus or auto or taxis which could be opted for any short distance commuting. It’s time people can offer for car pooling too. This would help the city to ease down on traffic and conserve nature to a certain extent.  (*These initiatives would be more meaningful post the end of COVID19 and when the city returns back to normalcy)
Next important initiative that Udupi citizens could take is installation of solar panels. This district has abundant sunlight from October till May months. It’s time to harness the power of Solar.
It’s monsoon time now, though Udupi gets sufficient rains, there are many people who suffer from the want of water during Summer seasons. It’s high time people start incorporating the Rain harvest system in every apartment and household to conserve the precious rain water. There are many other initiatives which could be taken up by people of Udupi like avoiding littering on streets, ensuring safe garbage disposal via the city municipal corporation, having more gardens/planting vegetables in the gardens, having more parks around the city for people to walk/play etc.
It’s time we get together and make this city a model one for all other cities in the country to follow. Together we can make it happen!!
