Annual Conference of Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgeons (ENT) of South India Held at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal

Manipal 18th October 2022: The annual conference of the Association of Otolaryngologists of India, South Zone, and Karnataka chapters was held between 14 and 16 October 2022 at Kasturba Medical College, (KMC) Manipal. It was jointly organised by the Department of ENT-Head & Neck Surgery, KMC, Manipal Academy of Higher education, Manipal and Association of Otolaryngologists of India, Manipal-Udupi branch.
The conference was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Lt. Gen (Dr.) M.D. Venkatesh on 14th of October 2022. The event was presided over by Dr. Satheesh Bhandary, Vice-Chancellor, Nitte University and Dr. Jaspal Singh Sahota, Former Vice-Chancellor Manipal University College, Malaysia who were the Guests of Honour. The inaugural function also included the release of a textbook brought out by the faculty of the department of ENT, Manipal.
Spread over a period of 3 days, the conference was attended by over 750 ENT surgeons. This included 50 reputed speakers who were invited not just from India but also from the US, England and Malaysia. They delivered lectures on various recent advances in their respective fields and participated in panel discussions. The orations and panel discussions of the conference focused on common ENT problems and their approach to treatment. Emphasis was given to advances in treatment for hearing impairment like cochlear implantation and airway obstruction management.

Prominent speakers included Prof. Simon Lloyd from Manchester, United Kingdom, Dr. Naveen Bhandarkar, USA, Dr. Jeevanan from Malaysia, Dr. Alok Thaker, AIIMS, Delhi, Mohnish Griver, Jaipur, Dr. Mohan Kameshwaran, Chennai and Dr. Prathamesh Pai from Tata Memorial cancer center, Mumbai.
Speaking about the conference Lt. Gen (Dr.) M.D. Venkatesh, Vice-Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education said “This conference has given an excellent platform for young budding surgeons to interact and learn treatment protocols from reputed experts in the field. We would like to thank all the speakers and the attendees for participating in this conference and providing their valuable insights. Forums like these provide opportunities for collaboration on research ideas and advancement of medical education. They help provide a common platform where experts get to share interesting clinical cases and discuss on the area of advancements and the challenges.”
More than 480 abstracts were submitted for the various competitive fields by the South Zone as well as the Karnataka delegates. They included best teaching faculty paper, award for best South Zone consultant paper, gold medal for best video presentation among many others. A total of 14 awards were given away in the various categories.
Special segments were added to this year’s conference which included Offbeat Otolaryngology and History of ENT. They were included to give a holistic approach to the training of ENT surgeons.
